History of Valgamedios Square
Valgamedios Square in Denia, also known as West Square, is one of the squares of the city. Valgamedios Square is part of the history of the city of Denia as it was one of the main entrances to the old city of Denia.
Valgamedios Square, colloquially known as West Square, was until only a century ago one of the sections of the wall of the old city of Denia and one of the main entrance gates to the city. This entrance was called the west entrance or land entrance, which is why the citizens of Denia still call the Valgamedios square by this name.
This entrance of Valgamedios square was oriented to the west of the city, where the cultivated fields were located and it was the main entrance and exit leading to the different land roads, as opposed to the entrance of La Mar street, which was exclusively dedicated to the port of Denia.
In the Valgamedios square, there were many craftsmen dedicated to the repair and construction of the means of land transport, mostly dedicated to the transport of sultanas and almonds from the city.
Present day Valgamedios Square
Nowadays, in the Valgamedios square, we find a small cobbled square with a few benches where we can rest and enjoy the magnificent sun of the city of Denia. In addition to this small square we find some shops as well as some restaurants to enjoy the gastronomy of Denia.
Very close to Valgamedios square we find Loreto street, a pedestrian street that connects Valgamedios square with Constitution square where the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the town hall of Denia are located.
In Loreto street we find a multitude of bars and restaurants where we can have a drink and celebrate dinners or lunches.
In Valgamedios square is located one of the fallas of Denia, which is called Falla Distrito Oeste, in honour of the name of the neighbourhood. This falla is one of the oldest fallas of the city, founded in 1928. Nowadays it belongs to the special section, where the 4 best fallas of the city are located. On the other hand, the remaining 7 fallas are located in the first section.
Parking in the Valgamedios square
In the Valgamedios square it is difficult to park, as in most of the surrounding streets it is forbidden to park or they are pedestrian streets, so the parking is reduced, however we can find a small free parking right next to it, or another free parking about 10 minutes walk away.
