The Castle of Denia is perhaps the city’s landmark and makes its silhouette unmistakable (well, that and the Montgó).
The Castle of Denia is a medieval fortress in the coastal town of Denia in the province of Alicante in the autonomous community of Valencia, Spain. It was built by the Muslims in the 11th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Islamic military architecture in Spain.
Presentation of the castle of Denia
The castle is located on a hill and has a large wall surrounding the entire complex, with several towers and a main entrance. Inside the castle there is a central courtyard and several buildings, including a palace and a mosque. The castle of Denia is open to the public and offers breathtaking views of the city and the sea.
The castle has been rebuilt and extended several times over the centuries and has served as a residence for feudal lords, a military fortress and a prison. In the Middle Ages, the castle was an important defence point against enemy invasions and served as a refuge for the population in case of attacks.
Today, Denia Castle is an important tourist and cultural site in the city, offering guided tours and historical and cultural events. It is also used as a venue for fairs, exhibitions and open-air concerts. It is a place of great historical, archaeological and cultural interest that allows us to learn about the history of the city and the region.
Places and leisure activities near the castle of Denia
We won’t go into the historical details because there are some nice museums there where everything is wonderfully explained, and I’m more of a science person…. But what I will say is that from here you have a spectacular 360° view, where you can spend your time taking photos of the city, the Montgó, Raset beach, the port, etc. Great!
It’s important to mention that at the top of the hill there is a kind of bar-xiringuito where you can have a drink in the shade of the pine trees (the castle is full of them). Very pleasant and useful to regain your strength after the climb.
There are also concerts of all kinds in the evenings during the summer, which are highly recommended for music lovers.
It’s ideal for visiting with children, as there are large green areas where they can play, run around, watch squirrels… and sometimes there are special events for them, so very good.
And finally, the price: about 3 euros if you don’t live in Denia (in which case the visit is free 🙂
