Representation and significance of the monument of the fisherman in Denia
The Monument of the Fisherman depicts a fisherman, shirtless, holding a swordfish with his bare hand that he seems to have sinned with his own hands. Remember that swordfish is a very large and heavy fish. Indeed, it can exceed 2m in length and weigh more than 100 kg and has a long “beak”, the rostrum, rather flattened which represents a third of the total length of the animal. It is also a very fast fish because its top speed is of the order of 40 km/h and it feeds on squid and fish.
It is then highly likely that this fish was chosen by the artist who made the Monument of the Fisherman to represent the strength of the fisherman.
