The Council square in Denia is located at the crossroads between la Mar street and Diana street. This square adjoins the Constitution square, where the town hall of the city of Denia is located, only separated by the parish church Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
The Consell square is so called because at the top of the square you can see the majestic tower of the Consell in the castle of Denia. This was the tower where they used to meet in the past to debate and discuss ideas or strategies to be carried out.
The Council square is very well known by the citizens of Denia, as it is often a meeting place. Besides, several activities are organized in this place during the year, such as open-air theaters, concerts, shows, orchestras, etc. Always free of charge.
One of the most striking shows is the battle of the fog, which takes place during the Moors and Christians festivities, where we can see authentic warriors practicing a historical battle for the city of Dénia.
It is also perfect to sit and enjoy the sun or the views of the castle. In front of the square there are a variety of places to have a drink and taste the gastronomy of Denia.
In the Council square itself, we can find one of the existing tourist offices in the city. This office is very useful to know more curiosities and secrets of this square, as well as offering maps and brochures of tourist interest.
In the upper part of the Consell square, there is a small museum called ” Espai Faller de Denia”. In this small museum we find a small exhibition of typical Valencian clothing, as well as some pieces of Fallas dolls, made and elaborated by Fallas artists.
On the side of the square, there is the pedestrian tunnel of Denia, still used today as a practical shortcut to cross the castle underneath. However, the tunnel was built during the Spanish Civil War as a shelter to protect the citizens from the attacks produced by aeroplanes that bombed the city. It is a perfect opportunity to visit this shelter that nowadays has been remodeled so that the citizens and visitors of Dénia can visit it.
